Prismfolio vs Empower: The Difference Nobody Talks About

Empower built a great portfolio dashboard. Then they attached a sales team to it. Here's what that means for self-directed investors.

Written in house: drafted with AI tools, edited by Melroy, on topics he chose.

I want to start by saying something most comparison posts won't: Empower (formerly Personal Capital) is genuinely good software. The fee analyzer is sharp. The net worth dashboard is clean. The retirement planner has real depth.

But after I connected my accounts, I got a phone call.

Then another one. The calls were from Empower's wealth management team. They weren't calling to help me debug an integration. They were calling because I had crossed a threshold that qualified me for their advisory service - a 0.49% to 0.89% annual fee on assets under management.

That's the business model. The free dashboard is the top of a funnel that ends with you paying an advisor.

There's nothing dishonest about this. It's disclosed. But it's worth naming clearly: Empower's incentive is to get you to hire an Empower advisor. Their portfolio analysis exists in service of that goal.

What I wanted instead

I'm a self-directed investor. I've read enough to have a view. I don't need someone to tell me what to buy - I need tools that help me see what I already own more clearly.

Specifically:

  • What are my funds actually holding underneath the ticker symbol?
  • How much of my "diversified" portfolio is secretly concentrated in tech?
  • What am I paying in fees in dollar terms, not just percentages?
  • How would my portfolio hold up in a 2008-style crash?

None of these questions require an advisor. They require data and a tool that presents it honestly.

The specific things Empower does better

I don't think intellectual honesty is optional in a comparison post, so here's where Empower wins:

Breadth of connections. Empower connects to 10,000+ financial institutions via Plaid and direct feeds. If you have accounts at a credit union, a niche brokerage, or a HSA provider, Empower probably supports it. Prismfolio currently works on Fidelity, Schwab, and Vanguard in the extension, with 1 Plaid auto-sync on Free and unlimited Plaid on Plus.

Retirement planner. Empower's retirement planner runs Monte Carlo simulations against your spending needs and projected income. It's a full retirement readiness tool. Prismfolio's scenarios focus on portfolio stress testing, not retirement income modeling.

Mobile experience. The Empower mobile app is polished. Prismfolio is a browser extension + web workstation - there is no mobile app.

The specific things Prismfolio does better

Fund look-through. Empower shows you your holdings. Prismfolio shows you what's inside your holdings. If you own VTI and VOO and VXUS and a target-date fund, Prismfolio will show you your true exposure to Apple, Microsoft, and NVIDIA across all of them - because those same stocks appear in every fund. Empower doesn't do this.

Fee detection in dollars. Empower shows your expense ratios as percentages. Prismfolio shows them as dollars lost over 10, 20, and 30 years, assuming a 7% return. The number is often shocking. A 0.75% expense ratio on a $300,000 portfolio costs you more than $100,000 over 30 years in forfeited compound growth.

No advisor calls. Prismfolio doesn't have advisors. We don't have a wealth management team. When you connect your accounts, you won't get a call. The analysis is for research and context - you make your own decisions.

Start without sharing credentials. The free extension reads your brokerage's own positions page without any credential sharing. You go to Fidelity.com, log in normally, navigate to your positions, and click the extension icon. No Plaid flow. No OAuth. You sign in on Fidelity's site; the extension reads the holdings table.

Who should use Empower

If you want a professional financial advisor and you're comfortable with the AUM fee structure, Empower's advisory service is genuinely well-regarded. The people on their team are licensed professionals. That's a legitimate service for people who want it.

If you have accounts at many institutions beyond the big three, Empower's connection breadth is hard to match.

Who should use Prismfolio

If you're self-directed, if you've read enough Bogleheads posts to have a framework, if you just want to see your portfolio clearly without being upsold - Prismfolio is the tool I built because I wanted it for myself.

The extension is free. No account required to try it.
